Become a volunteer

Volunteers are the heart of our community. They help people stay connected, supported and involved in community life. Their kindness and practical support make a real difference. Bilingual volunteers and people with strong cultural knowledge are especially valuable, given the diversity of the communities we support.

Students & interns

Work with us

Working at Stepwise means being part of a team that helps people navigate some of life’s most challenging moments. Our people work across settlement, family support, tenancy, domestic and family violence, Meals on Wheels, financial inclusion and community programs and corporate operations. Together we combine expertise with genuine care for the people and communities we serve.

We look for people who listen well, stay steady under pressure and want to make a real difference in their community. Many of our roles benefit from cultural understanding and language skills, reflecting the diversity of the communities we work alongside. Whether you're an experienced practitioner, a specialist in a particular field, or looking to build your career, we offer a supportive environment where you can learn, grow and contribute.

Current vacancies are listed below, along with what it's genuinely like to work here day-to-day.

Become a volunteer

Volunteers are the heart of our community. They help people stay connected, supported and involved in community life. Their kindness and practical support make a real difference.

Meals on Wheels alone relies on around 70 volunteers, delivering meals and staying connected with older people right across our community, often providing the only face to face contact someone has that day.

Beyond Meals on Wheels, volunteering opportunities exist across a number of our programs, from supporting community events to helping people build confidence, skills and connections. Bilingual volunteers and people with strong cultural knowledge are especially valuable, given how many of the people we support come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Volunteering with Stepwise is a genuine way to give back, build new skills, meet people and support your community. Whether you have a few hours a week or a regular ongoing commitment to offer, we'll help you find a role that fits your availability, skills and interests.

Students and interns

Completing a placement or looking for an internship? Stepwise partners with universities and TAFEs across Sydney to give students meaningful, hands-on experience working alongside our teams.

We welcome students from a wide range of fields, including social work, community services, human services, settlement, family work, financial capability and community development. Placements are designed to give you meaningful exposure to frontline community work, not just observation, so you'll be supported to contribute directly to the people and programs you're placed with.

Our staff take supervision and mentoring seriously, and many past students have gone on to build long term careers within our services. If you're studying toward a career in the community sector and want practical experience that will genuinely prepare you for the field, we'd love to hear from you.
