We support young people to understand their education pathways, access services and connect with opportunities that support them achieve their goals, from getting job ready to feeling connected in your new community. Here's what that can look like in practice.
A lot of young people come to us wanting support with jobs. We can't promise you a job or a placement with a specific employer, but we can empower you to get ready for the Australian job market. That includes support with your resume and cover letter, guidance on where and how to look for work, and pathways into volunteering, training and further education if that's a better fit for where you're at right now. We'll stay in your corner while you apply.
For students at partner schools, our settling-in program supports you to adjust to life in Australia through interactive workshops and activities. You'll build practical knowledge about everyday life, Australian systems, local services and community expectations, while building the confidence, connections and skills you need to settle into school and your new community.
Homework Club gives you a dedicated, supportive space to get your schoolwork done. We currently run sessions at Belmore Boys, Condell Park High, Beverly Hills IEC, Chester Hill IEC, Bankstown Senior College and IEC, Punchbowl Boys, Holy Spirit College, Birrong Boys, Chester Hill High, Bankstown Girls, Sir Joseph Banks and East Hills Boys.
We can support you in accessing mainstream services like education, health, training and community programs, and assist with the forms, applications, registrations and referrals that come with them, so you can navigate these systems with confidence. We also support you to build practical, everyday life skills, including working towards your driver's licence.
Settling in is easier with people around you. Throughout the year we run youth conferences, festivals and barbecues where you can meet other young people and get involved in your community. We can also connect you with sporting clubs and programs, leadership development activities, and mentors and role models within the community.
Sometimes what you need is someone who can speak up for you, whether that's with Service Australia, Service NSW, your school or something else going on in your life. If there's something outside what we do, like immigration advice or support for family overseas, we'll point you to the right service rather than leave you stuck.
Our youth workers hold a bachelor's degree or diploma in a relevant field, and many have lived experience of migration or settlement themselves, alongside equivalent experience working alongside young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds. Our settlement programs are funded through the Department of Home Affairs.
