Tenancy Resources

Information on common tenancy issues, and where to go for the detail that applies to you
Tenancy problems may arise at any stage. This may include the security deposit to the payment of the bond at the start of a lease, as well as ongoing repairs, security, or access issues during your tenancy and the return of your bond at the end of your tenancy. Southern Sydney Tenants’ Advice and Advocacy Service is funded to provide information, advice or advocacy for people renting in South Sydney.

Bond

The factsheet linked below explains when you may be asked to pay a bond and how much it can be. It also outlines the steps you can take to protect your bond and improve your chances of getting it back, amongst other questions.

Repairs and maintenance

You have the right and responsibility to request repairs and maintenance from your landlord. Your landlord must ensure the premises are safe, functional and suitable for their intended use. For more information about a landlord’s obligations, see the link below.

Notices and inspections

Landlords generally need to give written notice before entering a property or ending a tenancy, and how much notice depends on the reason. This is an area where getting the detail right matters, so we'd rather point you to the exact figures than guess.

For the specific notice periods that apply to your situation, see the Tenants' Union of NSW fact sheet on notices below.

Rent increases

There are rules around how often rent can be increased and how much notice you need to be given.

For the specific rules that apply to your situation, see the Tenants' Union of NSW fact sheet on rent below.

Ending a tenancy

Whether you're ending your own tenancy or your landlord is asking you to leave, there are processes that need to be followed correctly on both sides.

For the specific rules that apply to your situation, see the Tenants' Union of NSW fact sheet on tenancy below.

Going to Tribunal

If a tenancy dispute can't be resolved directly, it may end up at the NSW Civil and Administrative Tribunal (NCAT). Our tenant advocates can support you if your matter reaches this stage.

Tribunal duty advocacy
If you have a Tribunal hearing, we offer duty advocacy at:

  • Sydney NCAT - Mondays
  • Liverpool NCAT – Fortnightly Wednesdays
