In partnership with City of Canterbury Bankstown and as part of the “Free Bus to the Beach” initiative, Metro Assist organised an outing to Cronulla Beach for mothers and children late last month. Mothers and children alike enjoyed the sunny weather, fun during the school holidays, and group activities with other families.
The majority of women participating in the outing had experienced domestic and family violence. Many of these women had lived or continue to live with limited support networks and a level of social isolation, which has had significant impact on their mental health. This event aimed to provide space for fun, relaxation and social connection in their lives.
“It was great to see participants singing, laughing, swimming and chatting.” says Metro Assist Settlement Domestic and Family Violence Specialist, Jasmine Mguizra.
“The kids were thrilled to spend a day out at Cronulla beach, and had great fun on the playground and building sandcastles. The best part was that caseworkers and clients were able to connect and have fun, regardless of age, culture, language or religion! All barriers melted away.”
